Vicor Avila

Victor is an active performer, piano teacher, and piano collaborator who achieved a wide piano repertoire, playing from baroque to contemporary music in Canada and abroad in the United States, and Mexico. He holds a Diploma in Piano Performance (2011) at Escuela Superior de Música of Culiacán, a Bachelor in Music (2017) at Universidad Veracruzana with honors, and completed his Master in Music at University of Ottawa (2020).

Teaching:

As a pedagogue, Victor was invited to form part of the Suzuki Association of the Americas as a piano teacher in 2020. He teaches piano, composition, and counterpoint. His students were accepted in programs such as Boston Conservatory, Berklee. Victor also has experience working with children with special needs and developing alternative and multimodal approaches for music instruction. Currently, Victor lives in Ottawa where he is a devoted teacher and an active piano performer.

Achievements:


He has been granted several awards, scholarships, and positions such as Zoya Solod Piano Award (2018), Mitchell Sharp Commemorative Bursary (2019), Silver Medalist at Mateo Oliva International Chamber Music Competition (2015), and Semifinalist at Guadalajara Piano Competition (2015). In addition, the University of Ottawa awarded him a Teaching Assistant position as collaborative pianist. He also was part of Student Performers, and Student Teachers of University of Ottawa, jury
of the University of Ottawa Music Competition, and representative of the performance program at the Graduate Students Music Association.
He had piano classes with worldwide renowned musicians such as Sara Davis Buechner, André Laplante, Kyoko Hashimoto, Martin Karlicek, Jan Bratoz, Nick Deutsch, Pamela Viktoria Pyle, Oscar Tarrago, Jordi Savall, Enrike Solini, Leopoldo Erice, Edgar Dorantes. His main tutors were Rocio Gonzales, Jorge Covarrubias, and David Jalbert.

Performing:


As a performer, Victor played at different International Festivals like Orford Music Academy, Adamant Music, NUNTEMPA 20th and 21st Music Festival, Sinaloa Summer Festival, 7 Décadas de Luz. He also was the pianist répétiteur of University of Ottawa CALIXA-Lavallée Choir (2018-2019), and piano collaborative for institutions like University of Ottawa Vocal Repertoire Class (2019-2020), École de Ballet de Chelsea (2019), Coatepec Esperanza Azteca Choir (2013), University of Guadalajara (2015), and main pianist of Xalapa Philharmonic Orchestra (2015-2017) where he also played as soloist with orchestra.
